Operations and the Deadman.log.txt:
SET operations are largely done with Java: Getting the Internet connection to the NEST Server (http://www.nmdb.eu/nest/), passing the data request parameters and writing the data retrieved to local files, storing the data in a MySQL database, calling the IDL (or Fortran, C, etc) programs that model or process the time series, then delivering the data to this website. At each of these steps, a "Deadman" file is updated frequently indicating the relative success of the sub-programs. For example:
2018/04/09_20:28:01 # 2 + Gre + Waiting for some event; no action required + Producer_NEST_neutrons, get_NEST_neutrons nominal, calling this.Read_NEST_dwnldFile()
If a program fails for any reason, the Deadman file is supposed to indicate exactly which program segment is at fault. A program that monitors all processes reads the Deadman.log files to select different actions depending on the exceptions, such as switching to another data source, alerting the operator, etc.
About SET Data Post-Processing describes the operations done to incoming data, producing a reformated file with a straight-forward format.
